Diary

Day to Day Happenings at the BPL

July 12, 2007- Just over a year since the last entry-- quite a diary!!! Things are good in the Tarryalls. We had a mighty wet winter and spring which has brought the area to life with an abundance of wildflowers. There is a actually still a small snowfield on McCurdy Peak-- unheard of for mid July. The river has been in run-off mode since early May-- unhyeard of as well. It is finally dropping and clearing up which means the fishing is really getting good. We have had a bad mosquito season along the river, but it is finally letting up and we can once again enjoy being outside during the late afternoons. Our fall is nearly all booked up, but a few dates do remain available through our closing time in mid October.
May 5, 2006- OK, yes we've been kind of negligent in keeping up with the diary.....and maybe we'll get better at it. Things are cranking up around here and we actually had an event for Stephanie Howard of the Forest Service (who is moving on to a new area) to kick our season off just a couple of weeks ago-- it was hosted by our neighbors, Jim and Deb from the Ute Trail River Ranch. Things are dry in the valley, but we are holding out hoping we'll still get a good dose of spring moisture one of these days. The river is doing fine since it is fed from the snows up in the Park Range to our north where there's been a lot of snow this winter. OUr first big group of the season arrives in a couple of weeks so there is a lot to do-- painting, cleaning, clearing trails, etc.
January 31, 2005- After the recent warm-up and dry weather.....winter has returned and we're getting a bit of snow all around the area. Temps still are not brutally cold, but we know it's still winter. We've had some good snow so far this year which bodes well for the snowpack and the summer ahead. The river is nicely frozen, creating good skating. Snow shoeing is good around the lodge.
October 1, 2004- The fall season is winding down. We've had a busy season and have enjoyed all of our groups and guests. The fishing was the best we've had in years and it was nice to not be worrying about drought and water quite so much this year-------and we're hoping for a wet winter to stay on track to be truly drought-free for next season. We have seen more climbing route development on some of our private terrain, have done some new hikes that we hope to pass along to guests next year, have seen more road cyclists enjoying the Tarryall Road, and had a chance to end up the season with our favorite Aspen mountain bike ride--- Kenosha Pass to the lodge via the Colorado Trail and Nate Stoltz Trail-------a truly amazing Colorado ride.
July 30, 2004- The OWA summer is winding down. Things are looking greener than we've seen em for years thanks to the persistent summer rains. Second creek continues to flow and the river is looking good. Fishing has been great up to this point although we are watching the river level.
June 2, 2004- OWA is now busily underway with their staff training and we have gotten out to clear the rest of the trails so things are all now rideable! Second Creek is flowing well although it is mighty dry. The river is fishing well-- mostly Browns being taken at this point.

May 1 , 2004- The spring continues to be dry, but that has allowed us to finish up with several projects around the lodge getting us ready for the busy summer season. More landscaping is planned and we'll be working on restoring the pond later on this year. The trails all seem to be in good shape around the area although there are some blowdowns that we'll have to deal with when we get some more manpower.

November 25, 2003- Finally, we've had some snow! Over this past weekend the area received about 5 inches of snow and things are looking more like winter. Temps at night have been as low as -15 F and it continues to be windy. A few more snow events and there will be some decent snow for cross country skiing in the immediate lodge area

October 27, 2003- Things are dry in the Tarryalls, after a wetter than normal September, but it looks like there just may be some snow this weekend-- a Halloween snowstorm is brewing! Work is moving along on the repairs to the dam at Tarryall Reservoir and it looks like it will be all done by Thanksgiving-- then we can start hoping for plenty of run-off in the spring to refill the lake.
